With reducing air pollution being at the top of everybody’s mind, General Motors (GM) joined the bandwagon by announcing the launch of the Cadillac Lyriq, its very first fully-electric SUV in the entire series of Cadillac electric vehicles. This release comes in the wake of the company’s objective to recapture the electric automobile market, which presently is being ruled over by none other than Tesla Inc.
Expected to be launched in the year 2022 or 2023, the Cadillac Lyriq is an outcome of GM’s decision to convert the traditional combustible engines into electric ones. It stands as a symbol of the luxury brand’s transformation, which is driven by both style and electrification. In fact, it is being seen as the future the company is looking at, as well as an opportunity to re-establish the brand as a premium one.
The Cadillac Lyriq SUV is built on GM’s latest battery architecture called Ultium propulsion system which is scalable and can power up automobiles of different sizes and types. The Lyriq is said to offer an assured mileage of 300 miles, and the configurations that it will come with are that of single motor rear-wheel drive as well as double motor all-wheel drive. One of the biggest attractions of the new car will be its 33 inch LED touchscreen as well as augmented reality. Does raise eyebrows, isn’t it?
The futuristic electric car has quite a bold and stylish design. It features a black colored crystal grille right in the front. What is most striking is its dramatic LED lighting which welcomes the owner as he or she approach the car. The tail lamps are also LEDs and form part of the orchestrated lighting system. The roof-line is lower, while the roof spoiler that flows through speaks volumes of the aerodynamic design of the vehicle. The curved LED touchscreen that spreads across the entire dashboard offers a jaw dropping experience to the user. The picture quality is excellent. The car is quite spacious and has adequate storage. Another aspect is that the inside temperature, the seat and the mirror are automatically adjusted as per your the last driving session. The Cadillac Lyriq fully-electric SUV comes with a noise cancellation system. Accelerometers and microphones capture the frequency of the noise from the tire space, and thereafter neutralizes it by inverting the noise.
Being an electric vehicle, the obvious question that will pop in everybody’s mind is the battery performance. The battery will provide 100 kWh of energy and has a charging capacity of 19kW.. It can be charged at home using a Level 2 charger. If one is using a DC fast charging, then the charge rate can go beyond 150 kW, and nearly 80% of the charge can be attained within a span of 30 minutes. The batteries are made with nickel, cobalt, and magnesium. The Ultium batteries will also add aluminum.
An interesting aspect to note is that Cadillac Lyriq will also come with an enhanced version of Super Cruise. This, according to Cadillac, is the first real hands-free driver assistance feature on divided highways to be found in the automobile industry. This feature has also been upgraded recently with the automated lane change function. In addition to this, the vehicle will also have remote parking. The use of ultrasonic sensors will enable the vehicle to park on its own both in perpendicular as well as parallel parking spaces.
With such amazing features and sporting the latest in technology, the Cadillac Lyriq electric SUV is definitely something to look forward to and maybe own as well. Now it all depends on when GM will eventually release this vehicle in the market. Hopefully, it will be before too many players enter the electric vehicle segment.
