The world is changing rapidly and this dynamism has made us invent ways and means by which we can leverage technology to complete certain tasks quickly, within a matter of minutes. In keeping with these fast paced time, Qualcomm brings in Quick Charge 5 that seeks to recharge your smartphone battery within a span of exactly 5 minutes.
Charging our phones is probably one of the first things we do when we wake up in the morning. On the course of the day, if we run of charge, we connect it to a power bank and move around. Often, depending upon the charge percentage left, the time taken to charge often extends to half an hour or more. Obviously time taking, especially if you are in a rush situation.
Well, no longer duration of charging. With Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 5, you can get the battery of your charged within a matter of minutes. The new technology allows one to attain 50% charge within 5 minutes and full charge in 15 minutes. Quick Charge 5 is an upgradation to Quick Charge 4 that was introduced by Qualcomm a few years back. The latest is, however, a major advancement made by the company as it is said to have an efficiency level of more than 70% than its earlier counterparts.
As per the company, the new version is more versatile and will enable users to use their device for a longer period of time without worrying about the battery going down. Quick Charge 5 can charge smartphones and any other device four time faster and up to 10 degrees Celsius cooler. This new version makes use of standards pertaining to the USB Power Delivery Programmable Power Supply or PD-PPS which allows it to command a greater degree of control over power supply as well as voltage during charging. In addition, by supporting 2S battery system for two battery cells that are wired in a series, the charging voltage gets doubled which in turn increases the speed of charging the device.
This new solution is capable of supporting a voltage input which is more than 20V as well as the Dual Charge technology. It offers voltage protection in eight levels, of which there are for thermal protection, three are for timer protection and three are for current protection. It comes with a 25 Volt USB-input overvoltage protection as well as external power controls of more than 30 Volts. In fact, the entire charging of the device is adjusted based on the power source’s capacity which is identified through the use of Qualcomm’s Smart Identification of Adapter Capabilities technology. This makes the new upgraded version much more stable and safe as well.
A major advantage of the new Quick Charge 5 is that it is compatible with older technology. This implies that the hardware in this new version will support earlier versions of the Quick Charge accessories and other devices that are powered by Snapdragon, Qualcomm’s mobile platform. In fact, one can say more than 250 mobile devices and more than 1000 accessories are supported by the upgraded version. Some of compatible Quick Charge 5 accessories are wall chargers, car chargers, and power banks. However, it needs to be noted here that iPhone and USB-C PD devices can only be able to avail the benefit of fast-charging Quick Charge 4 and higher versions that are based on USB PD.
The availability of Quick Charge 5 technology at a commercial level is expected to take off only in the latter part of 2020. It will be part of the entire package of Qualcomm’s parts. With the introduction of Quick Charge 5, Qualcomm has further strengthened its foothold in the processor and modem market. With many companies using its solutions and products for the advantages they offer especially in terms of compatibility, it’s time they make the solution available in the market fast.
